Whistler

Day 214 – Diving headfirst into a ravine

After saying our farewells to Karen (Randy was long gone despite sleeping through his alarm) we headed for Nanaimo to catch the ferry back to the mainland.  From Horseshoe Bay we drove up the Sea to Sky Highway noting the changes since we last drove the route – a different season and vast improvements made for the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Fifteen minutes short of Whistler we turned off the main road and drove up into the mountains.  Our destination, a metal bridge spanning a deep gorge with a raging river at the bottom, Whistler Bungy.  Elliott and Kat had been planning a jump for a while and Marg and Jeff kindly put in half for my birthday, so I got to jump to.  Nobody else seemed interested in much other than spectating, in fact Marg seemed a little hesitant to even cross the bridge.

Trying to look brave.

In the office they weighed us in, Elliott and Kat who were going to jump together were warned that they’d probably get a fair dunking as they were right at the top of the weight limit.  Unfortunately the guy in charge decided that they would get too wet and shortened their rope, boo!  Kat had to climb onto Elliott like a koala so they could hook them together, then all Kat had to do was hold  on while Elliott shuffled toward the edge and bravely jumped off.   [Warning: if you’ve got headphones in and intend to watch the video below, I suggest you turn the volume down a bit now…]

That’s Kat’s brave face I guess.

Going down.

According to Elliott, Kat screamed the whole way down, when they got to the bottom and started going back up she changed to a relived giggle, only to realise that second fall was nearly as big and changed back to screaming!

For some reason they slotted a few extra people in, then it was my turn.  Despite being fairly height desensitised from climbing it still took a bit of will to throw myself head first toward the rapids below.  Ben and Megan luckily arrived just in time to get a good video:

After all that excitement we headed into Whistler, checked into our hotel, went for a wander around the village (again, unsurprisingly different in Summer, though not much warmer) and had dinner at The Spaghetti Factory.

Well all I can say is that Elliot must be in love to carry Kat off the edge like that, presumably knowing she would be screaming loudly right into his ear for what must have seemed like a long time.
Well done Elliot.

Matt - you're mad!
